What is partial Dentures and overdenture? (Types and benefits)

Dentures are removable prosthetic devices (false teeth that resemble natural teeth) that replace missing teeth, and can help fix your smile (ADA, n.d). There are many reasons for missing teeth—an injury, tooth decay, oral cancer, etc. However, dentures can restore any missing teeth, which will benefit your looks and your health.

People who lose teeth tend to find that it causes facial muscles to sag, making you appear older than you are. Missing teeth can also result in trouble eating and speaking; thus prosthodontics is important to ensure that missing teeth can be salvaged. To improve your smile.

There are many types of dentures, including partial dentures and overdenture. This article will elaborate on these different types of dentures you could get, if you are considering getting some installed.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are usually use when one or some natural teeth still remain in the jaw. A partial denture is a plate with one or a few false teeth fixed on it. They have clasps attached to hold them in place in your mouth, which may be visible sometimes.

The false teeth are attached on top of a plate, which could be made of different materials, such as plastic or metal. Plastic partial dentures are cheaper to make, but typically can damage surrounding teeth more easily than metal ones do.

On the other hand, metal partial dentures are pricier to make, but they are also stronger and more sturdy than plastic ones. Metal partial dentures are easily supported by surrounding teeth. A metal partial denture has a metal base, but has gum-coloured plastic attached to it, so it does not look unnatural.

Overdentures

An overdenture is a type of denture that is made of acrylic, and is fit over some of your remaining teeth. Sometimes, some of your teeth can be prepared for the fitting of overdentures, which is beneficial over partial dentures as this preserves some of your jawbone and increases stability of the dentures.

Overdentures have been found to maintain and prevent shrinkage of your jawbone, and helps stabilise the dentures (Samra, Bhide, Goyal, & Kaur, 2015).

Thus, overdentures are generally more functional than other types of dentures, as they also last longer and are less likely to require refitting.

Average Price in Singapore

In public institutions in Singapore, full dentures cost on average S$555 to S$1269 per arch for non-specialist care, and S$1427 to S$1627 per arch for specialist care at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (MOH, 2019).
